In 1913 the United States Government commissioned James E. Fraser to design a new 5 cent piece. The bold design was very unusual fro coinage - a portrait of an Indian and a portrait of a bison (actually a resident of the New York Zoo). This is the only instance in which this combination appears in American Coinage. Nickels are made of .750 copper and .250 Nickel and weighed 5 grams at the time of minting.
